Organic percentage calculator
Organic percentage is the weight of certified organic agricultural ingredients divided by the total weight of agricultural ingredients, multiplied by 100. Water, salt, additives and processing aids are excluded from both halves. 95% or more allows an organic claim; 70 to 94% allows "made with organic"; below 70% organic ingredients may only be named in the ingredient list.

610 g organic ÷ 710 g agricultural × 100. 4 g excluded as water, salt, additive or processing aid.
| Market | Outcome | What you may claim |
|---|---|---|
| New Zealand | Made with organic | "Made with organic [named ingredients]" — no mark on the front of pack |
| Australia | Made with organic | "Made with organic [named ingredients]" — no mark on the front of pack |
| United States | Made with organic | "Made with organic [named ingredients]" — no mark on the front of pack |
| European Union | No organic claim | The EU has no 70–94% tier: ingredient list only |
Overall tier on the New Zealand thresholds: Made with Organic. This calculation assumes every additive and processing aid you have used is permitted — that is a separate test. See how to check a substance.
A worked example
A muesli of 400 g organic oats, 150 g organic dried fruit, 100 g conventional sunflower seeds, 60 g organic honey and 4 g salt. The salt is excluded, leaving 710 g of agricultural ingredients of which 610 g are organic. 610 ÷ 710 × 100 = 85.9%, which is the "made with organic" tier rather than an organic product claim. Finding a certified source for the sunflower seeds would take it to 100%.
That is the recipe loaded above, so you can change one line and watch the tier move.
What this calculator does and does not do
- It applies the standard exclusions for water, salt, additives and processing aids.
- It does not check whether your additives and processing aids are permitted, which is a separate test.
- It does not verify your suppliers' certificates — do that here.
- It does not expand compound ingredients from a supplier composition sheet. Expand them by hand, or use a free ANZOC account, where compound ingredients expand automatically at any depth.
- Nothing you type here is sent anywhere. The calculation runs in your browser.
